Yen Weakens Against Dollar as Investors Assess Global Market Risks

Date:

Global currency markets showed mixed movements on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, as investors cautiously increased their exposure to higher-yielding currencies while political uncertainty in Europe continued to influence trading. The US dollar fluctuated during early Asian hours, the euro remained stable and the Japanese yen showed limited movement against the greenback.

The Australian and New Zealand dollars also advanced by 0.1%, reaching $0.6986 and $0.5668, respectively. These gains reflected a modest improvement in investor appetite for currencies that offer relatively attractive returns.

Against the yen, the dollar was steady at 158.56 ahead of an auction of 20-year Japanese government bonds. Investors were watching the sale for indications of demand for Japanese debt.

Chris Weston, head of research at Pepperstone Group in Melbourne, said currency movements reflected improving risk appetite, with investors showing greater interest in currencies offering higher returns.

However, developments in Europe continued to unsettle financial markets. Political unrest in France and Italy raised concerns about government stability and fiscal management, although the euro remained relatively resilient.

French authorities introduced curfews in several cities on Monday following nationwide anti-government protests. The demonstrations have added pressure on President Emmanuel Macron during the final months of his time in office, increasing uncertainty surrounding France’s political outlook.

In Italy, the government announced plans to deploy 500 troops following two days of unrest.

ING analysts said the difference between French and German government bond yields had come under renewed pressure as violent protests dominated headlines.

The spread between French and German 10-year government bonds widened by 9.9 basis points on Monday to 147.3 basis points. A wider spread indicates that investors are demanding a higher return to hold French debt compared with German bonds, reflecting increased concerns about relative risks.

France’s 2027 budget has also become a key focus for investors. ING analysts expected further developments on Tuesday, when parliament was scheduled to hold its first formal vote on the revenue section of the finance bill. The outcome could influence assessments of the government’s ability to manage its finances amid political uncertainty.

Despite these concerns, the euro’s stability suggested that investors were not yet treating the French situation as a broader threat to the European financial system.

In the United States, the yield on the 10-year Treasury bond remained unchanged at 5.131%. Government bond yields are closely monitored by currency traders because they influence the relative attractiveness of investments across countries.

The US dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major currencies, rose 0.2% to 101.98 on Monday, ending a two-day losing streak. Its recovery indicated renewed support for the dollar, although trading remained cautious during the Asian session.

Meanwhile, the dollar was unchanged at 6.6811 yuan in offshore trading after the People’s Bank of China kept interest rates steady, in line with market expectations.

Cryptocurrencies also recorded limited movement. Bitcoin traded at $81,906.58, while ether gained 0.3% to reach $2,405.99.

Overall, currency markets reflected a combination of improving risk appetite and continuing political concerns. While several higher-yielding currencies posted modest gains, developments in France remained a source of uncertainty for European assets.

Investors are expected to continue monitoring political developments, French budget discussions, government bond yields and central bank decisions for indications of the next direction in global currency markets.
